I am totally frustrated because since I am having a 64 GB thumb drive and nothing is been installed so far, Later I decided to check the disks information there I can see that there is only 4/5 MB is there in my USB in total(not free space it is all the space it has) so I check again and found that that was been a 2 partitioned and a huge unallocated (62.1 GB) drive, but at the same time when I am using softwares like RUFUS it didn’t made any partitions like Balena did, this is so horrible for those who like would like to use live media other than installing on my system and who like kali linux’s persistence mode. Then I heard of your software and I tried it and it was so fast and stable software(a loud appreciation for that), First week I didnt noticed anything but later I noticed one pop up message that appeared when I am using Kali linux live (non persistence) that there is not enough disk space on this drive to run the rest of the operation. OK I will give you a short introduction of me, I am person who used to create dozens of bootable USB in a week for myself my friends for all of my circle I am person who used to give the bootable media, and at first I used to use another software like bootable media installer, RUFUS and so on.

Yes this is not at all an issue with the Images we use that’s all about the software we used for this purpose. Even if you only do a Quick format, SD card formatter will remove existing partitions and data, But it doesn’t write to the entire SD card, and won’t find possible errors on the card. An overwrite format takes a while to complete, so be prepared for that. If you go that route, make sure you select an “Overwrite” format, and if the option is available, check CHS format size adjustment. Reformatting the SD card with “SD Card Formatter” from the SD Association ( ) can help you assure the card is completely clear of any existing data or partitions that might get in the way of an image flash. It is possible something preexisting on the SD card could trip up balenaEtcher, but those cases are few and far between. If the SD card has other partitions on it before you flash, that usually gets cleared away, and the image replaces all data and partition info on the SD card. I do that every time before I flash a new image, just to make sure the SD card has no issues.īalenaEtcher does not do anything to the SD card except overwrite it with whatever comes within the image file. I’m curious as to why you want to avoid formatting the SD card.

It is common for Windows to not be able to read most partitions and for there to be empty space on the SD card immediately after flashing it with a new image. The screen cap you have provided does not show anything unusual in this respect. But without seeing the info you are referencing to do your installation, we can’t be sure whether that is what’s going on.

It’s possible that by booting your laptop from the SD card, that code did not run.

This is how it’s done on Raspberry Pi OSes. That gets written to the SD car as it is, and the OS then resizes the partitions to fill the card when it boots up the first time. Quite common for an OS image to only be the size it requires to store the image in a file.
